(More customer reviews)I have spent my life in broadcasting, sound and video.I have used every conceivable mic you can name and several you likely never heard of.I have a fairly extensive collection of mics ranging from super cheepies from the old Lafayette Radio of the 1960's to the latest and greatest pro studio PR-30 from the genius of Bob Heil at Heil Sound.

That said, for pure dollar value vs. sound quality, the Behringer XM-8500 is a steal.It sounds every bit as good as similar mics selling at five times the price and is just as rugged.

Its only drawback is its propensity to be a little sibilant if worked straight on, very close without a wind screen.Put a $2 wind-screen on it and all that disappears and its the match of mics in the $100+ category. (Rule of thumb taught to me back when I was first getting started in radio:Never use this design of mic without a wind screen -- no matter what brand it is.)

I own several of XM-8500's and use them mainly for loan outs to friends who want to do a recording with something that sounds better than the mic built into their digital or tape recorder.I also have a dedicated pair that I use to do field interviews for an on-line news service I produce -- recording these days on a Zoom H4 digital recorder.Nobody who has borrowed one of my XM-8500's has ever complained.Nobody Ive ever interviewed has sounded anything but natural.

No, its not going to be the equal of an EV RE-20 or my Heil PR-30, but for $20, I dare you to find anything that sounds better or is constructed better than the Behringer XM-8500.

Nady SP-5 Dynamic Cardioid Neodymium Mic Review

(More customer reviews)I've been a semi-pro musician & sound guy for about 25 years, and have used a lot of mics. EVs, AKGs, various condensers, and of course, the venerable Shure SM-57s, 58s, and the "Beta" series.

The Nady SP-5 is a no-brainer for 10 bucks. It's not a Shure Beta 58, but for $10, you're going to be hard pressed to do better. Sound is full and punchy with vocals, just like it should be with a good dynamic mic, feedback rejection is good, and it's built well, too. It's a pretty good mic, and not just "for the money". I'd say quality-wise, it's comparable to the Peavey & Shure mics in the $40-$60 range.

Of course the king of the budget mics is the Behringer XM8500. These are the equal to a Shure Beta 58, (a $150 mic) for $20!

Thanks to deals like these, nowadays even the most financially strapped garage band can stock up on decent mics for chump change. I remember only a few yearsago when $10 or $20 would get you a cheap plastic hunk of junk tape recorder mic from Radio Shack or Wal-Mart. How times have changed!

actual freq response on this thing
is about 50 to 14 k or so... in
3 db band..

even this mic, as with most XLR type mics
you need to get something like the A85 F
with appropriate cable ( xlr Male to xlr Female
needed ) to boost output to useable levels.

it is CLEAR.
intended really for vocals.. ( interview mic , they say)
but
even ifyou shout into it, doesnt seem to break up.
so
can be used for vocals or backup vocals also.

its OMNIdirectional.. well.. a good part of it anyway.

about 300-600 ohms type..

if you can get it for about usd 60 or so.. landed
into your home, TAKE it.

oh as with most all mics,,,
Proximity effect on this thing is severe.

even ifyou use it without a85f,
do keep at least 8-10 inches AWAY from mic.

if you use a 85f,then one can use it
at12-18 inches away even..
its more clear that way, less booming
and other stuff.

for home studio.. can be used to record vocals too.

will re test on other
instruments to check useability
and report back, one fine day.

in meantime, enjoying this very decent
mic.
