Audio Technica ATR-55 Condenser Shotgun Microphone Review

Audio Technica ATR-55 Condenser Shotgun Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently purchased this microphone, hoping to improve the audio picked up by my Canon GL1's built-in microphone. The price was good, the reviews seemed to lean a little more on the positive side, so I decided to bite. I assumed quality of the audio would be better, that it would filter out surrounding noise more efficiently, and that it would make my videos sound more professional. It also may be of note, that I planned on using this mic with a lot of handheld camera work, which you may or may not do. Well, it seemed to offer little to no performance upgrade from the camera's mic.To be fair though, the GL1 doesn't offer a lot of control over audio levels, so your milage may vary.

CONS:
-This microphone will pick up camera noise if mounted on the camera. The included shoe accessory to mount on your camera is absolutely useless if you want clean audio. I recommend using a shock mount if you have one (or better yet, a seperate mic stand).
-Despite the fact it can be mounted to the camera, it is in no way made for handheld work. The slightest bump of the camera or mic, will register as a loud thud in recorded audio.Using the zoom on certain cameras will be out of the question because it picks zoom motor noise and the sound of you pressing the buttons.
-Normal mode makes the audio sound compressed and unnatural compared to my camera's microphone.
-Tele mode does amplify the incoming audio significantly, but unfortunately doesn't filter out much of the noise that a directional microphone should.
-Not a professional level mic, by any means. If you have a $1000+ camera, this will be the weak link in your production. The Mic built into your prosumer (not consumer) camera probably works better.

PROS:
-Slightly more directional than my camera's microphone.
-Tele mode works well if your trying to capture the sounds of something further away than your camera mic would normally pick up. But be prepared to clean up audio in post to get rid of possibly unwanted ambient noise.
-The mic makes voices sound a bit clearer, but only in close range (no more than 10 feet away).
-An improvement if you have a very poor quality mic, or no mic at all.
-The simple fact that the mic is not attached to your camera means that you can place the mic close to your subject, even if you can't get the camera close. You'll need an extra long cable, of course.Make sure to place the cable in an area where it will not be bumped, because the cord can pic up reverberations if it's disturbed.

If I could do it again, I would have saved a bit more money to get a nicer mic in the $100-$200 range. This mic is really designed for amateur use only, as it sounds nowhere near broadcast quality. If your looking for a good mic to mount on the camera for handheld work, a nicer XLR mic would be a better bet. If I would have thought about it, I would have checked Youtube before I bought the mic, as there are many tests using this mic vs. other video mics. I would recommend trying that site to hear actual audio tests of this mic, and various other mics that Amazon sells- before you make a purchase. Also note, that this is a mono mic, so you'll need a mono to stereo adaptor if you'd like to hear this mic in both L&R channels.

Audio-Technica AT899 - Wireless microphone Review

Audio-Technica AT899 - Wireless microphone
Average Reviews:

Those looking for quality sound in a mini lavalier microphone will be pleasantly surprised with the Audio-Technica AT899. Small clip-on microphones such as these, which are well suited for interviews or in situations where a boom mic isn't possible, can range in price from around $200 to over $600 each. Frankly, unless you're a seasoned audio phile, the differences will be so minor to the ear that you would be hard pressed to pick a high priced competitor in a blind test. Fortunately, you don't have to do that. As a producer/director for an indy production studio, I had access to mics from others in the business and listened to actual sound samples. In the end, I applied the savings towards other film equipment and went with the AT899. For those looking at the AT899, be aware that there are several versions of this microphone being sold, so you need to have the right model number to truly do a cost comparison from several sources. The AT899 must be used with the AT8537 power module which connects into a standard 3-pin XLR cable for those hard wiring it to a video camera or sound mixer. This power module comes standard with the AT899 kit that also includes various clip-ons and mic covers, conveniently housed in a plastic box for transport and storage. There are some models of the AT899 with two letters following the model number that don't include the power module, which accounts for the lower price. The power module by itself runs over $100. We are using the AT899 for movie set interviews and other applications and have been completely pleased with the results. We have experienced no disruptive sound from the cable itself, which can be problematic with some lavalier microphones. Therefore, I consider the AT899 to be a exceptional value in terms of its price point vs. quality and am pleased to recommend it to others.

Audio Technica Pro Series Dynamic Headworn Microphone for Wireless Systems Review

Audio Technica Pro Series Dynamic Headworn Microphone for Wireless Systems
Average Reviews:

Can't say how it works. It was recommended by a local store to go along with Audio-Technica's PRO 88W VHF wireless microphone systems that are designed for use with a camcorder. However, upon receiving both items, I discovered the headset has a 4-pin connection, and the wireless set accepts 3.5mm pin. The descriptions clearly state this. I just didn't read it, since I was going on 'professional' advice. My bad. I will say, the headset does seem to be well made, for the price. It's probably a great buy if it has the right connection for your system.

That being said, American Musical Supply, who the headset was ordered from, was exceptional fast in responding to my request for a RA# to return the headset. Credit was promptly applied to my account. I will shop with them in the future!

This clip on mic is serving me well on my society band.I switch from tenor to alto to soprano sax at the drop of a hat and this mic is relatively easy to remove and re-attach quickly. Oh, and it sounds good too. If only I could get the sound man to turn me up more.

The Shure WB98H/C (the wireless version of the Beta 98H/C) is a premium cardioid condenser instrumental microphone that clamps onto the bell of wind instruments or onto the rim of percussion instruments. The integrated gooseneck and ratcheting swivel joint allows the microphone to be easily positioned and secured in place, and an isolation shock-mount reduces the transmission of instrument 'key noise' and other mechanical noise. A gooseneck angle brace is included to provide better retention of the microphone placement during more active performances. WB98H/C with 10 ft. cable terminated to 4-Pin Mini-Connector

Mini Cardioid Lavalier Microph Review

Mini Cardioid Lavalier Microph

For me this was an upgrade from the cheap ATR lapel mic. I heard these mics when helping another guy with his setup. I was blown away at how clear the voice is. I put them on my agenda to purchase as soon as the funds became available. I recently used these at an airshow with WW2 planes in the background. A very loud background. They worked perfectly to isolate the subject and reject the planes. In fact, I prepared for that and recorded a second audio source so that I could blend in the perfect level of engine noise to the background. I didnt want it too quiet with only the subjects being heard. I needed to have the viewer feel they were at the airport.
These mics are outstanding. Its not really a drawback but it is extra time to hook everything up. And you will have to have a method of getting an xlr source into your video camera. However you get that done will be worth it. These mics are worth every penny. The next step is around 800 and is not necessary for the semi-pro.
I just cant over how rich these sound. They are not tinty at all and have great bass. They are just a great step up from the cheap lavs that everyone starts out with. Combined with an HD vid cam, my videos are now completely professional sounding and looking.

Sony ECM-CS10 Tie-Clip-Style Omnidirectional Business Microphone Review

Sony ECM-CS10 Tie-Clip-Style Omnidirectional Business Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using Sony's ECM-MS907 for more than 5 years now and have loved it; so two weeks ago I ordered the Sony ECM-CS10 to use for audio journal keeping while on the road. When it arrived just a few days ago, I compared the audio quality of its recordings to that of my existing Sony microphone. In spite of its pleasing aesthetics, I found it to be a sad disappointment!!!The ECM-CS10 is a very noisy microphone with an audio quality far inferior of what I would expect from a Sony mic.(I wonder whether this is because it is a plug-in-power mic).

Frankly, I think I'm probably going to return it and look for something else.I've purchased a number of microphones on eBay and have only been satisfied with one other type of compact mic.Microsound makes it; and its a mic with a cable lead about three inches long.I'm not in any way affiliated with them, but I would recommend their product.

With all of this said, I think I still might spring for Sony's top-of-the-line lapel microphone, just to see whether it's any good.
