Those looking for quality sound in a mini lavalier microphone will be pleasantly surprised with the Audio-Technica AT899. Small clip-on microphones such as these, which are well suited for interviews or in situations where a boom mic isn't possible, can range in price from around $200 to over $600 each. Frankly, unless you're a seasoned audio phile, the differences will be so minor to the ear that you would be hard pressed to pick a high priced competitor in a blind test. Fortunately, you don't have to do that. As a producer/director for an indy production studio, I had access to mics from others in the business and listened to actual sound samples. In the end, I applied the savings towards other film equipment and went with the AT899. For those looking at the AT899, be aware that there are several versions of this microphone being sold, so you need to have the right model number to truly do a cost comparison from several sources. The AT899 must be used with the AT8537 power module which connects into a standard 3-pin XLR cable for those hard wiring it to a video camera or sound mixer. This power module comes standard with the AT899 kit that also includes various clip-ons and mic covers, conveniently housed in a plastic box for transport and storage. There are some models of the AT899 with two letters following the model number that don't include the power module, which accounts for the lower price. The power module by itself runs over $100. We are using the AT899 for movie set interviews and other applications and have been completely pleased with the results. We have experienced no disruptive sound from the cable itself, which can be problematic with some lavalier microphones. Therefore, I consider the AT899 to be a exceptional value in terms of its price point vs. quality and am pleased to recommend it to others.
