I am the primary sound operator for a community theater that has owned 12 of these mics for about 5 years.They get hard use and do fail.However, the sound they provide is very good and they reject stray sound well.In other words, they are slow to feed back even with all twelve mics in use.(Monitor speakers are seldom used in our theater, but these mics can accomodate them.)

We've addressed earpiece fit issues by usinig small pieces of medical tape behind the ear and just in front of the lobe.The earpieces fit most people, but the added security is worth it.Watching an actor drop lines while trying to resecue a dangling mic or seeing a unit get stomped are the stuff of sound man nightmares.Trained "mic fitters" also place the mics to prevent well meaning actors from bending and breaking units.Cord failure is common, but if bent repeatedly the metal tube suspending the mic can snap.

Even with these challenges, these are still my mic of choice for our venue.Their nearest competitor is the Countryman E6 Countryman WCE6 Microphone Tan.The sound is very similar to my ear, with the Countryman offering slightly more bass and a bit better durability and fit.Countryman sells end-user installable replacement cables for about $50.Another advantage.However, the mics sell for at least $100 more.And they pick up more ambient sound, meaning more feedback.

Our theater owns another Countryman product, the B6.The mic capsule is attached directly to the cable so it can be worn as a lavelier, hidden in the hairline, etc.I mention it because cable failures are also common on it...and probably all of these miniature microphones.

With all these drawbacks why buy more?The Audio Technica customer service department is very efficient and generous.They serviced, actually replaced, any of our original mics that failed at no cost.I recently sent in some of the replaced units, and was charged for new ones, but at a rate much below the lowest price offered by the internet mega-retailers.I hope they don't change their business practices now that I've let the cat out of the bag.

(More customer reviews)I tried the Samson Airline 77 in Jan of 2010 ... the description looked interesting, and I had a need for a wireless
headset mic without a body pack.After testing it out, I immediately returned it.

It had two problems, one major and one minor.

The major problem was that if the headset was powered off, the receiver would emit a lot of static as output,
which causes havoc with a sound system.

The minor problem is that it's difficult for some performers to remember which switch on the headset is
power and which is mute ... by touch alone.(And, if they hit the wrong switch, we're suddenly blaring
static to the audience). We worked around this by putting some gaffer tape over the power switch.

The two performers who tested the headset both found it difficult to wear as the instructions desired...
with the transmitter against the center back of the head ... they felt a more natural place for it would
be against the bottom back of the head.

(More customer reviews)I'm having to revise my initial review as I received two of these kits and both let me down. The first one stopped working after 30mins, so I ordered a replacement. The second unit was DOA. The mic and headset are salvageable, but the wireless components (transmitter and receiver) are not. What a waste of money.

If you are lucky enough to get a working unit it will work out of the box, but having had 2 units and 100% failure rate I'm staying away.

The kit comes in it's own carry case, so it's very portable. It's made in China, the workmanship reflects that. It's not shoddy, ( though the receiver jack is sitting at a slightly off-center angle! ) but it won't stand up to "excessive wear and tear".

Two things worth mentioning:
The lapel clip does not swivel and removing the wire to turn the clip around could damage the wire as it's in quite tight.

The headset is for left ear only as the mic only moves in one direction. (I prefer the ear pad sitting on my right ear, but I can live with it on my left!)
