Replaced for free (Amazon), new unit works correctly.

Range is about as described if you orient the antennas as the manual tells you - at 90 degrees to each other. Because this is a purely analog device, it lets you know when you start pushing your limits by the familiar radio white noise chirping as you move.

You can mute it (Standby mode where it still transmits silence) or shut it off completely (confirmed 0mA battery drain in this mode).With the transmitter off, the receiver may pick up occasional random transmissions so you will want to power that off or mute it on your mixer/etc when not in use.

There are two output power modes (hi/lo), and the battery power drain is about 63mA on high and about 37mA on low.High buys you slightly longer range, but in a 40'x60' room low seems adequate.

The mic seems to use a proprietary jack, but it is quick-release (like the garden hose) and locks very nicely.Mic itself works fine, though the headband sits on your temples and is pretty tight - but it's designed for active use, so that's appropriate.

Audio output is a TS 1/4, unbalanced obviously.

Overall it is good enough for fitness instructor use.I'm using rechargeable 9V batteries (cheap 300mA from Hong Kong) and they seem to live up to their stated capacity so far.I would have liked it to have a charger stand (like a Sonicaire toothbrush) but I might just wire up a barrel connector so that it can be plugged in without asking exercise instructors to switch batteries after use.Of course the unit is not sold with rechargeables so I can't expect any of this to be done for me.
